Active Isolated Stretching

Aaron Mattes is the original developer of the Active Isolated Stretching and Active Isolated Strengthening (AIS) programs.

We honor and express our deep gratitude to Aaron for teaching us this amazing, life changing work.  We use these protocols daily for our own self care and we use them extensively in our professional therapy sessions.

To best define Active Isolated Stretching, we will share with you a quote from Dr. Jeffrey P. Haggquist, DO which we found in the Preface of Aaron’s 2012 book, Aaron Mattes’ Active Isolated Stretching:

The Mattes Method employs a full range of motion movements to contract and strengthen targeted muscles while at the same time stretch the opposing (antagonist) muscles.  This simultaneous strength and flexibility training develops potency in the newly-established range of motion, make it functional and safe, while balancing the soft tissue tone across the joint.

Mattes exercises promote range of motion, restore or develop brain-muscle connectivity, and increase muscle strength, as well as that of all other soft tissues, including fascia, tendons and ligaments.  In fact, as a strength exercise, AIS promotes healthy bones.

Aaron’s flexibility programs have two options:

  • Active Self Care Stretching
  • Therapist Assisted Stretching

We find it helpful to first assist our clients and teach them how to properly perform the each stretch.  The client becomes empowered to perform their own active self care stretching at home.

To paraphrase what Aaron once said to me, we acted upon by the forces of gravity everyday.  Therefore, at least some parts, if not all, of the stretching program should be performed daily to counteract the forces of gravity.
